Mental Health Counseling: A Halloween Treat, Not a Scary Trick

As the leaves turn to shades of crimson and gold and the crisp autumn air fills our lungs, Halloween is just around the corner. It's a time for costumes, candy, and all things spooky. However, for many, the idea of seeking mental health counseling can be scarier than any haunted house or ghostly apparition.

The Ghosts of Stigma

One of the biggest reasons people find mental health counseling frightening is the ghost of stigma that haunts our society. We've been conditioned to believe that seeking help for our mental and emotional struggles is a sign of weakness. We fear the judgment of others, worrying that they'll think less of us if we admit we need support.

But just like the masks and costumes we wear on Halloween, these societal expectations are often just a façade. In reality, seeking counseling is a brave and responsible step towards better mental health. It's an act of self-care that should be celebrated rather than stigmatized.

The Creaky Door to Understanding

The eerie creak of an old door is a classic horror movie sound, but when it comes to mental health counseling, it's more like the welcoming creak of a friendly porch swing. Counseling provides a safe and confidential space where you can open up about your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. It's a place where understanding and empathy take the place of judgment and criticism.

Therapists are trained professionals who are there to help you navigate the twists and turns of your emotional landscape. They won't jump out and scare you, but they will guide you through the darkness towards the light of healing and self-discovery.

Monsters Under the Bed

Our fears often conjure up imaginary monsters lurking under the bed or in the closet. Similarly, our anxiety and worries can seem larger than life when we keep them hidden and unexamined. Mental health counseling helps you confront those monsters head-on, shining a light on your fears and anxieties.

Through counseling, you'll develop coping strategies and tools to face your challenges. Those once-terrifying monsters may become mere shadows of their former selves, no longer capable of haunting your thoughts and dreams.

The Costume of Self-Discovery

Just as Halloween costumes allow us to transform into someone or something else for a night, mental health counseling can help you discover a new and improved version of yourself. It's like donning the costume of self-discovery, exploring the depths of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

In therapy, you can peel back the layers of your metaphorical costume to reveal your true self, gaining insights and understanding along the way. It's a journey that can be both enlightening and empowering, helping you to embrace your authentic self.

Bringing Mental Health Awareness to Hilliard

Kaela Vance, a licensed professional clinical counselor supervisor, is no stranger to advocating for mental health.

She has participated and been a sponsor of numerous community events throughout the year to help raise awareness - Scioto Township Fire Department Golf Outing, North market Apron Gala, and the City of Dublin July 4th Celebrations, just to name a few.

This Halloween season, to raise mental health awareness, Kaela is participating in the Hilliard Chamber of Commerce Scarecrow Spooktacular, where her unique Scarecrow Therapy display will remain on display at the Hilliard Chase Bank until the end of the month, the Destination Hilliard Halloween Haunt taking place in Old Hilliard on October 28, and the Hilliard Trunk or Treat held at the Hilliard YMCA on October 29.

Kaela's participation in these events exemplifies her dedication to fostering a more empathetic and supportive community.

Mental Health Counseling Can Be Your Halloween Treat

This Halloween, let's dispel the notion that mental health counseling is something to be feared. Instead, let's celebrate it as a treat for your well-being, a path to self-discovery, and a way to confront and conquer your fears. Just like Halloween night, counseling offers a chance to shed your mask and be your authentic self.

Remember, seeking help for your mental health is an act of courage, not weakness. Don't let the ghosts of stigma or the monsters of anxiety keep you in the dark. Embrace the opportunity to grow, heal, and live a life that's less scary and more fulfilling. Mental health counseling is a path toward a brighter, happier future—a future that's definitely worth celebrating, whether it's Halloween or any other day of the year.
