Treating Depression

What is Depression and its symptoms?

Depression is a mental state of low mood and aversion to activity. Classified medically as a mental and behavioral disorder, the experience of depression affects a person's thoughts, behavior, motivation, feelings, and sense of well-being.

The core symptom of depression is said to be anhedonia, which refers to loss of interest or a loss of feeling of pleasure in certain activities that usually bring joy to people. It may feature sadness, difficulty in thinking and concentration and a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping. People experiencing depression may have feelings of dejection, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. It can either be short term or long term.

How does Kaela treat Depression at her office in Dublin, Ohio?

Depressed mood may not require professional treatment, and may be a normal temporary reaction to life events, a symptom of some medical condition, or a side effect of some drugs or medical treatments. A prolonged depressed mood, especially in combination with other symptoms, may lead to a diagnosis of a psychiatric or medical condition which may benefit from treatment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective for depression disorders and is a first line treatment. Because many mental health conditions can be a result of, or be compounded by poor physical health, some lifestyle adjustments may be required of the patient in an effort to help resolve or relieve stressors on the body that can be related to the patient's anxiety - sleep schedule modifications, dietary adjustments, supplementation, and so on. Some patients with more severe episodes of anxiety may require medication.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy in which the person being treated recalls distressing experiences whilst doing bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movement or tapping either side of the body. Studies have indicated EMDR effectiveness in depression. Read my blog posts about EMDR

More about Kaela's treatment style:

Your current situation must change. We know depression can bring your life to a complete stop. We want to get you moving in the right direction again. We want you to experience a life beyond loneliness, discontent, and purposelessness. The great news is that you can have a better life — sooner rather than later!

At Kaela's office, conveniently located at Teal Saguaro Wellness, Inc in Dublin, on the North West Columbus, we take our patient's health seriously! We offer a holistic perspective to patient's mental health, that is often integrates not only a variety of therapy approaches, but also considers a patient's physical wellness. We recognize that taking a medication as a quick fix to reduce symptoms does not address what's causing those symptoms. As such, in addition to counseling - after we meet with our patients and get an idea of what specific concerns they have and what their lifestyle is like - we may refer patients to nutritional consultants, wellness experts, chiropractors, psychiatrists, or other medical specialists as appropriate.
